The Puncturists – Punk Tourists(Dead Swan Records)

New EP from a band featuring Pat from System of Hate. It’s being touted as an EP, but at seven songs it clocks in just shy of 20 minutes of prime garage punk rock. Opener Jackanory Johnson serves as a stark observation of the achievements of our now failed “ex-leader”. When he trots out so-called successes, somebody should just play this track back at him! The rest of the tunes follow suit, telling a chilling summary of how life has been like for many of us over the past couple of years.

Musically this is very much back-to-the roots stuff – primitive, catchy and angry. Think of proto punk bands that released short blasts of fury on labels such as Raw Records a few decades back and you’re on the right tracks. Even when a band takes on the old sounds, it can still feel like a breath of fresh air, and that’s exactly what The Punkturists have delivered. Tom Chapman
