Marvel Platinum: The Definitive Carnage – David Michelinie, Erik Larsen, Mark Bagley (Panini /Marvel)

\"\"

Anticipation is high for the big screen debut of one of Spiderman’s deadliest foes, the gruesome symbiote offshoot of Venom, Carnage. And as that pivotal movie moment draws nearer, what better time to reacquaint yourself with David Michelinie and Mark Bagley’s most feared creation by diving straight into its greatest tales. The Marvel Platinum “Definitive” series do an excellent job of providing you with everything you need to know about a character, and this is no different as they’ve trawled the Marvel archives once again to bring you The Definitive Carnage.

You’ll get to read all about his astonishing debut, as the darker offshoot of the already unhinged Venom as he hosts (among others) deranged serial killer Cletus Kasady to wreak his revenge on the world. Along the way of course, he has many battles with our favourite web slinger and as well as other popular figures from the Marvel Universe, who pop along to lend a hand and we get to meet the family too with his “wife” Shriek and the malicious Spiderman clone Doppleganger along for the ride. This really is Marvel at their most sinister and some of the stories in this collection are just downright creepy, to the point that they could be considered horror comics.

Beautifully put together and spawning several decades, the evolution of the character, is perfectly presented and carefully brought to the forefront, fleshing the character out, to the point that you will feel there is nothing left to know about the murderous symbiote. There are of course many other stories from this wonderful character, but if you want to read the best of them, then look no further. It does exactly what it says on the tin. This is the definitive Carnage…Chris Andrews
