Pelican – The Cliff EP (Southern Lord)
Well this was certainly a surprise. Eschewing their usual instrumental style to highlight a title track containing vocals and a surprisingly accessible format to boot. It’s actually pretty good with a definite QOTSA/Josh Homme influence. The remaining three tracks comprise of two remixes of the title track; a ‘sans vocal’ Justin Broderick mix which sounds very much like his Jesu material, and an Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer mix in which the Isis/Palms duo return the band very much to familiar territory. Closing track ‘The Wait’ ends proceedings in a decidedly non-committal fashion. It’s an OK EP but not essential and maybe worth waiting to see what the next album brings. Ian Pickens
