They’ve been smashing out their particular brand of thrash infused hardcore since 1989 but, with a mere 3 albums to their name Rotterdam’s The Obnoxious are not quite household names that perhaps they should be. Their last release was 2015’s Beware Of The Dogs and was indeed a fine slab of hardcore, which probably deserved more notice than it got. But with the promise of a new record in 2019, what better time to keep any fans interest piqued, with the release of a riotous live album.
Having never witnessed the Rotterdam boys in the live environment, I can only imagine the impact of the old school hardcore tracks like Rwanda Special and Period would have in a sweaty little dive somewhere, while tracks like State Of Anarchy and Rotterdam It, are perfect circle pit fodder. Captured in their hometown, Live Underground is the sound of a band going full tilt live. There’s some Dutch banter in between songs, so I have no idea what they are saying, but the crowd liked it, although I did pick out little titbits such as “fuck the media” and “support your scene.” Standard hardcore stuff, but that’s why we love it.
I can’t get enough of bands like The Obnoxious and I’m looking forward to hearing new studio output from them and who knows, hopefully I can witness them live too, because judging purely by this record, they absolutely kill it live… Chris Andrews
