Litterbug – Countdown to Schadenfreude E.P. (Just Say No To Government Music Records)

Like your punk rock in a straight-up fashion, with no frills and an honest approach that gets straight to the point? Then say ‘ello to Blackpool’s Litterbug. Here we have the Countdown to Schadenfreude E.P. which landed earlier this year on lovely red wax. 1977 runs through these Lancashire upstarts’ veins and it doesn’t look like that’s gonna change any time soon in the future.

Introvert and See the Light boast Buzzcocks guitars, whilst Don’t Change focuses on a chanty call and response, but the extended play closer is the pick of the bunch for me. With a clear Hüsker Dü influence, Fast Forward has more of a dynamic range with the bass cutting through the guitar intro chords before that quintessential British first wave punk vocal style hits.

If four tracks on plastic aren’t enough for you, then Welcome to Schadenfreude is available on CD and as a download, coupling three more new tracks with seven oldies recorded between 2010 and 2014. Whilst the band aren’t gonna change the world, you could do a lot worse than to get down the front with them at Rebellion Festival, sink a few beers and pogo to your heart’s content. Ginge Knievil
