Justine and the Unclean – Be Your Own Reason (Rum Bar Records)

The free summer single giveaway is still firmly underway at Rum Bar Records and next out of the bag is Justine and the Unclean with Be Your Own Reason. For those unfamiliar with the band, it’s their take on the funner elements of ‘77 infused punk mixed with power pop goodness that hits the spot. Here in Wales we have Helen Love, and Justine and the Unclean could be long lost cousins; that is, synths aside in Love’s case, both share a mutual love of the Ramones and a bubblegum pop hook.

The UK may also have a tenuous reference point in the short-lived Blonde Movement of the late 1980s, see The Primitives especially. More new singles are promised in a few months’ time, but in the meantime you’d do well to show some love for this single and to check out last year’s Get Unclean LP for pogo encouraging ditties galore. You’ll be lucky if Be Your Own Reason repeats to fade in your head. All together now… “Oh oh, oh oh… oh oh, oh oh…” Ginge Knievil
