We at Mass Movement are proud to be Welsh. As well as flying the flag for Welsh music, producing a podcast based in the capital city and faithfully representing our geek brothers and sisters across this fair land, there’s also an element of Mass Movement that loves a train. The combination of steel and steam working in unison to achieve their common goal, is a thing of absolute beauty and right here in Wales we are lucky enough to have one of the best examples of Victorian workmanship in all of Europe.
The Vale Of Rheidol Light Railway, built in 1902 after some delay by Sir James Szlumper, was at the time of construction considered the finest example of a narrow gauge railway and whilst lead mining in Ceredigion was fast approaching it’s demise, tourism was on the up. The line itself runs from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge and has changed hands several time over the years with Cambrian Railways, Great Western Railways and British Rail all having a say in it’s history over the years. Nowadays it’s run by a charitable trust, who breathed new life into the old line by making improvements on it’s locomotives, carriages and track, as well as opening lines not seen for years.
The carriages and locomotives that take you on the stunning 12 mile journey across some of the most beautiful parts of West Wales, are the same carriages that ran on the line between 1923 and 1938 offering a truly unique experience, that culminates in the breathtaking sight of the Devils’ Bridge Waterfalls. Hell there’s even Sarah Bunton’s famous Chocolate Shop and a cafe at Devil’s Bridge to top of your amazing adventure.
A better day out in Wales, you will not find. The combination of history, great craftmanship and most importantly of all…fun make this an absolute MUST visit for the family.
