I started reading Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire just before the latest installment in Star Wars cinema history, The Rise Of Skywalker and much like Rebecca Roanhorse’s excellent novel Resistance Reborn, this offers another glimpse into the plight of an increasingly desperate General Leia Organa, as she dispatches her most trusted agents across the galaxy to find allies to aid the battle against the might of the First Order.
The difference though is that her best spy Vi Moradi has been dispatched to Batuu. Now if Batuu, rings all sorts bells for you, then it’s either going to be because you remember it as the planet Anakin Skywalker visited during The Clone Wars whilst looking for Amidala, or it may be because Disney have just recreated a huge real life chunk of it at Galaxy’s Edge the Star Wars themed park at Hollywood Studios.
So, is this book just a glorified travel brochure you ask? Well yes quite frankly. But it’s so much more than that. This is Star Wars at its absolute finest. With the First Order on her tail, Moradi, must use all her wits and skill to track down anybody willing to help the cause, whilst not exposing herself as a Resistance spy. As she searches high and low for heroes to help her, we can’t help but become immersed in the planet she’s exploring, which is where the travel brochure comparisons come in. But Star Wars at its core is a battle between good and evil, heroes and villains and Black Spire is no different in that respect as we quickly become embroiled in Vi’s underdog story.
As Star Wars fans, we love having the blanks filled in for us and we love getting this glorious universe populated even more and that’s what Disney and Delilah Dawson have done so well here. Black Spire opens more doors on every glorious page, and it will have you smashing your piggybanks open in the hope that you visit the real life Batuu at Walt Disney World… Chris Andrews
