Wonk Unit – Good Good Glad To Hear It (Pirates Press Records)

Incredibly, this is Wonk Unit’s eleventh (!) album, and what an album it is. If you are at all familiar with Wonk Unit, then you might know that it is something of a musical journal in which Alex Wonk and the band throw thoughts and emotions down onto paper and in the studio. I’ve been listening to Wonk Unit on and off for a few years now – and this is a crowning moment for the band.

I’ll be honest – whereas previous releases had some hits but also some throwaway material – this album is different. Hit after hit. There’s no point in trying to categorise Wonk Unit musically as when you think you’ve got it nailed, they’ll chuck a touch of mariachi, or electro-pop into the mix. It might be because that’s exactly where their musical journey takes you, and it might be just to fuck with you too. Who knows!

On one song I might be thinking of something like Snuff (Duncan Redmond has previously collaborated with Wonk Unit) or Southport, but the next moment I’m thinking Madness (see Like that Madness tune on Complicated Girl).

Lyrically, Alex wears his heart on his sleeve, singing “I never realised how happy I was until yesterday” or “I survived everything, that the welfare threw at me”  – honestly these are superb tales and a little invitation from Alex to look into his complicated mind and share experiences.   I’m loving this, and recommend that you give it a go.
