Virgin Steele – Nocturnes Of Hellfire & Damnation CD (Steamhammer)
With opening track ‘Lucifer’s Hammer’ it’s apparent that Virgin Steele are exorcising their power and hitting you head on like a bastardised culmination of ManOwar meets Queensryche – very impressive. Driving rhythms, classic heavy metal guitar work and more screams than a teenage girls sleepover… the excitement level in notched up to full – its American made metal. Alongside the traditional 80’s heavy presence the melodies run strong, plenty of catchy choruses and crowd pleasing sing-a-longs. David Defeis is an outstanding metal vocalist, many would surely love amongst their ranks; sharp delivery, clean pronunciation, and compellingly addictive. The two CD digi-pak boasting fifteen extra songs is an exceptional addition, but not essential, as all fourteen songs here stand by themselves. Make of the lyrics what you will, make the concept if it feels fitting, but one thing I tell you is ‘Nocturnes Of Hellfire & Damnation’ will have your fist pumping and your head banging. Virgin Steele are metal through and through. Mark Freebase
