The Troubled Bones – Pyschosis (Self Released)

When people band the term garage rock around these days, it can more often than not refer to distorted, full-tilt, four to the floor, all-out speed driven rock ‘n’ roll. On the flip side, and like Thee Headcoats on Valium, there’s The Troubled Bones. Released with little fanfare, this 3 track CD led by Psychosis leans to the 1960s British Invasion; think Blighty does the Nuggets compilation. I can smell a hint of Wilko Johnson style pub rock too, and that’s not a bad thing.

Head honcho Martin Chamarette turns Dan Sartain at his balladeer best for Ma Cherie. There’s a kinda looseness that bolsters its rugged charm. With a mistimed snare here and there, the track is all the better for it. On repeated listens it just gets more beautiful. Concluding the short affair is Broken Biscuits with its primitive blues shuffle.

It’ll be interesting to see where the road takes The Troubled Bones. I spy a live date with The Dirty Strangers in October. Will Quireboy Guy Griffin be making an appearance that night in Bedford? Could we see The Bones’ Martin reunited with his former 1980s bandmate? There’s only one way to find out! Ginge Knievil
