The Puncturists – Foxed As A Newt (Dead Swan)

Blimey, this must be one of the quickest punk productions I’ve come across. This album was recorded live at the Fox and Newt, Leeds in September 2024, and barely a month on,  I have this CD hot off the press. What you get is nine tracks of perfectly executed and well-recorded melodic garage punk. This is perfect fodder for the armchair gig-goer – the songs flow thick and fast, without having to listen to the guitarist tune up, or the drummer whack the snare 100 times in a row whilst soundchecking.

Gail leads the boys on a merry romp through the set, cranking out catchy tunes with at times nicely cynical lyrics – check They Don’t Pay Support Bands out for a prime example. There’s some great interplay between guitarist Pat and bassist Dale, as often the bass drives the melody whilst the guitar beefs the sound up, as can be heard brilliantly on 55, an ode to getting older.   A great little live collection of songs, presenting The Punturists up close and personal.
