The Cheap Cassettes – Kiss the Arse of My Heart (Rum Bar Records)

Someone told me that the C60 is gonna make a comeback. It was probably some hipster, but with nostalgia included, I cannot think of a more satisfying task from yesteryear than to make a mixtape. No, not a playlist, kids. A mixtape! Ask your grandparents or something. Hailing from Seattle, The Cheap Cassettes don’t just fly the flag for an outdated musical format, but for modern rock ‘n’ roll coolness too.

Whilst the gnarl of a Les Paul Junior workhorse rings, Kiss The Arse of My Heart is straight from the Westerberg/Stinson school of thinking. For all the punkier edges, there’s that passion that spills freely. You just can’t put a price on that shit and it’s certainly not something that can be bought. The 7” is backed with Black Leather Angel which doffs a musical cap to the Dead Boys. The single also comes with a free download of Hieroglyphics in Lipstick and Worse N’ Better.

Everyone of a certain age knows pencils are not just for drawing cocks on your school textbooks; but also for tightening the reels on your overplayed 1980s tapes. With an infectious sprinkling of power pop, The Cheap Cassettes deserve your attention. C30, C60, C90, GO! Ginge Knievil
