The Briefs – Platinum Rats (Damaged Goods)

\"\"

I don’t know exactly how long it’s been since a new Briefs record landed on my desk as I can barely remember which records crossed my path in the last twelve months, but I know it’s been longer than a year. Heck, it might even be as long as a decade since I last bumped heads with The Briefs, so let’s just say that it’s been a while. Yeah, that sounds better. So, it’s been a while since I last tangled with The Briefs and while, during that time, my world has been flipped upside down and been turned around by all death, loss, tragedy, happiness and joy more times than I care to think about, nothing much has changed for these Seattle punk reprobates.

Platinum Rats is a frantic, buzzsaw riff led collection of Buzzocks meets Ramones meets Devo anthems that’ll make even the most sullen faced, rulebook obsessed scenester tap their toes and do that weird robot pogo dance thing that “proper” punks do while singing along with every word of each and every one of it’s catchier than a catchy thing at its catchy best tunes. It’s nice to know that some things, like pie and mash, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, the inherent treachery and evil of the Conservative Party and The Briefs ability to write jaw dropping, infectious punk rock songs never change.  Platinum Rats is just what the punk rock Doctor ordered, so do as Doctor Von Punk says and take it as needed as many times a day as you can and you’ll be punker than punk again before you know it. Smashing stuff… Tim Cundle
