Stop Calling Me Frank – Gimme Life (Rum Bar Records)

What do you mean Stop Calling Me Frank aren’t British? You sure? There’s more than a whiff of Stiff Records from this Boston ensemble. Labelled as “almost 30 years in the making,” Gimme Life is taken from their full length due this Autumn. If you plan on pigeonholing Stop Calling Me Frank any time soon then think again. There’s a ska shuffle, a new wave sheen and horns that could’ve been half-inched from an early Dexys single. In my head I’ve conjured up a forgotten Old Grey Whistle Test episode with …Frank nestled between XTC and Nick Lowe. Don’t trust my head though!

The band are no spring chickens and keep things very real by singing about the missus, the kids, the bills and the daily grind. Hence, “Gimme hope…” instead of Gimme Danger. If there’s one word that sums up this free release, it’s intrigue. Only time will tell what the full picture looks like when the leaves start falling from the trees in 2018. Oh, and I can’t stop calling them Dave. It must be a Trigger from Only Fools and Horses thing. Ginge Knievil
