Protest The Hero – Palimpsest (Spinefarm Records)

I honestly don\’t know where to look, or find any solace or shelter from this intense attack on my senses. Don’t misunderstand me, it’s a great record, but Palimpsest is such an overwhelming experience that there’s a real possibility that if you listen to it for too long, you’ll end up suffering from sensory overload It may just kill you. But at least you’ll die with a glorious smile on your face.

I’ve always had a problem with trying to fit Protest The Hero in the right frame. The musicianship and extremely detailed songwriting and pure, raw emotion. This time around, the Canadians have found perfect middleground without having to compromise. They discovered soul! Yes, soul is the right word. Now I can really feel the songs, in every fiber of my being. The intricate melodies, the unexpected twists, the punk rock attitude, the prog vibe, and even the galloping bits that are definitely influenced by the NWOBHM. Oh yes and singer Rody Walker, how could I forget about him? Like an amazingly talented athlete he leaps over every hurdles and through each burning hoop effortlessly. What more could you ever want?  Martijn Welzen
