Prehysteria! (Full Moon Features / MVD)

Spread the love

Charles Band. Not a name on every movie lovers lips, but if you are of a certain age, then the chancs are, you would have come across his work, whether in a directorial capacity or as a producer, because if like me you were guilty of renting a video judged purely by its cover in the late 80’s early 90’s, then you’ve almost certainly seen a Brand B-Movie. Keen to follow in the footsteps of Jurassic Park’s success in 1993, Brand put out a dino movie of his own –Prehysteria!, now available for the first time on Blu-Ray.

Adding another recent success to the mix, namely actor Austin O’Brien, the boy who was last seen running around with Arnie in The Last Action Hero, Prehysteria is a fun monster romp which sees O’Brien’s character Jerry Taylor come into possession of a set of rare eggs. Pursued by Rico Sarno’s evil museum curator, who’s willing to get his hands on the eggs at any cost, the eggs hatch, leaving Taylor with some extreme dino sitting to do. Did I mention that he names the dinosaurs after his favourite pop stars?

Sure it’s cheesy, but it’s one of those movies that you can park your brain on the sofa next to you and just enjoy. More good news is that David Allen, of Puppet Master fame’s, stop motion robotic dinosaur effects stand up quite well considering the budget that they probably had and the acting is not as bad as you remember. If you haven’t checked it out before, it’s worth 83 minutes of your time. If you did see it back in the day, then it’s worth watching again because time hasn’t spoiled Prehysteria! and you’ll enjoy it just as much now as you did when it originally hut the shelves of the video rental shops...
