My Life in Music… Tyler Burns (This Gun for Hire)

Metallica – Ride the Lightning This album really turned me onto metal. The intro of “Ride the Lightning” made me pick up that dusty guitar we kept hidden away in the closet. Just an overall fantastic record that has changed my entire perspective on music ever since I heard it. We all have that one defining record. For me this is it.

Megadeth – Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? After my love for Metallica and interest in thrash metal spiked in my younger teens. It was inevitable that I would soon find Megadeth. This record really opened my eyes to the world of aggressive music  and the impact it can have on political views. Not to mention the playing on the record is second to none.

Avenged Sevenfold – Waking the Fallen This album was so relevant during my high school years. It was the first real record that drew me towards screaming vocals and a new exciting way to play guitar. The melodic to heavy ingredients were perfectly balanced. To this day I can’t get enough of this record.

Dead and Divine – The Fanciful This album was the devil in disguise for me. I had listened to their album The Machines We Are through-out high school but never really grasped the weight of them and the effect they’d have on me. They finally clicked for me and it has become so important to my playing. The Fanciful in my opinion demonstrates the best display of Dead and Divine. One of my biggest influences in song-writing. These guys I should mention have an incredible discography and truly never got the credit they deserved.

Alexisonfire – Watch Out! This record always seems to get the most spins for me. I\’ve had to buy two copies of it due to over listening.  The playing and hidden gems in the production of this record continue to surprise me. It has shaped the wayI listen to records and how to write interesting parts. As well as to not be afraid to write a clean section. It’s such a good example of what a group of people can do as a band that elevates everyone\’s individual skill levels.

The Holly Springs Disaster – Motion Sickness Love This was a band that had the right mix of everything. Another Canadian band that never got the gratitude or attention they deserved. If you are a metal head in Canada chances are you’ve heard this record and wondered how it didn’t elevate these guys to stardom in the metal community. Perfect batch of songs. Great party record.  Check them out if you haven’t heard of them.

Alexisonfire – Crisis This is the fan favourite by Alexisonfire. It’s the record that turned me onto them. Undoubtedly the first choice I would recommend to anyone who hasn’t heard of them. The perfect combination of sticking to their roots as well as writing commercial hits. They really flexed all their strong points in this record. Crisis is very near and dear to me.

Guns N’ Roses – Appetite for Destruction This one is a pretty obvious choice being a guitar player. It speaks for itself. If you haven’t been living under a rock for 30 years you know the gravity this record had on the world. Not many bands can write a single record that can backpack their entire career on a silver platter.

Bring Me the Horizon – Sempiternal  This record is a serious guilty pleasure of mine. I had been really into classic rock for a long while and drifted away from metal. It restored my faith and brought together a lot of elements that I had gravitated towards in older music. Catchy vocals mixed with deadly drums and guitar is a lethal combination. It brought me crawling back into metal looking for more.

Thrice – Artist in the Ambulance  Narrowing down my favorite Thrice record for this list was very difficult. This is a band that covers so much ground and their entire catalogue is ground breaking. But Artist in the Ambulance has hints of a lot of the styles they’ve adapted over the years. Incredible band that wrote whatever they wanted to. Genuine artists are very refreshing, especially when they can cover multiple genres.

This Gun for Hire release their debut album Something a Little More Sinister on March 31st
