Millencolin – S.O.S. (Epitaph)

Millencolin and me, we go way back.  It’s nearly twenty five years since I first found their debut album, Tiny Tunes, tucked away in Probe Records in my home city. Heck, I don’t know if Probe even exists anymore, but Millencolin and me, we’re still around. Unlike yours truly though, and my worn out knees, knackered shoulder and increasingly jaded demeanour, Millencolin, like the finest of very wines, get better with age. Along with their US peers (namely NOFX, Lagwagon and No Use For A Name), Millencolin wrote the melodic punk rock rulebook. They’ve forgotten more about the genre than most bands will learn in a lifetime, and S.O.S., their ninth album is also their finest moment – so far. There isn’t a dull moment on this record. It is, to coin a phrase, all killer and no filler. Snappy, precise and packed with more punches than the first round of a Mike Tyson fight, S.O.S. is the sound of a band doing what they do best and better than ninety percent of the rest. It’s a punk rock anthem extravaganza that proves that age is just a state of mind and sometimes us old folks really do know better than you darn kids.  Buy it, borrow it, steal it, do whatever you need to do, but just make sure that you get S.O.S.…  Tim Cundle
