There seems to be a strong power pop resurgence of late. Whether it’s New Hampshire’s Brad Marino or The Speedways from these UK shores, great records are landing at a rapid rate in the last 12 months. You won’t hear me complaining, though! Not to be outdone in the power pop melee, Jordan Jones has dropped his self-titled debut LP and we’re met with a healthy dose of Californian sunshine.

An acoustic guitar leads us into Jones’ world on Wrote You a Song For Me before we’re hit with perfect, well-crafted pop rock. All the components are there, from jangly guitars to swirling organ. Then there’s Jordan Jones’ voice which isn’t a million miles away from the much missed Marc Bolan. Understood is a two minute thrill ride while My Somebody is a great big pop from Frenchy’s bubblegum.

No Makeup speaks of not being a bad guy and Rumors Girls boasts the neatest guitar hook since the British Invasion. 1960s harmonies prevail on Waiting before we saunter to How To Be and Do You Want to Hang Out; two much welcomed later album ballads which add contrast. It’s back to the rock for Be My Baby with its lick straight from the Cyril Jordan school of thinking, whilst LP closer Oh My Heavenz talks of teenage dreams that never come true. In Jones’ case it would appear that those reveries have been disproved.

Jordan Jones has this knack of making the 1970\’s sound current. If you dig power pop legends such as Big Star and/or Raspberries, then this gem of an album will have you reaching for the rewind button time and time again. Turn up the volume and get your Ray-Ban Wayfarer shades on, because 2019 power pop has never sounded so cool. Recommended… a million times over. Ginge Knievil
