As Friends Rust – Up From The Muck 7” (Unity World Wide)

Almost two decades since Florida Hardcore powerhouse As Friends Rust last released new music they are back with a new single, and it’s as if they never went away. At the time they were a breath of fresh air – emerging from the likes of Morning Again and Culture, far from dishing up the crushing metal Hardcore you’d expect them too, they were something different. Cranking out melodic, passionate tunes and touring a lot meant they found friends across the globe.

If I recall they disappeared into the ether quite abruptly, so it is true to form that out of nowhere here they are again. The title track is so uplifting, offering a message of hope in these bleak times. Honestly watch the lyric video, listen and read the words and be inspired. Moving onto Last of the Famous International Scumbags, if the song title isn’t clue enough then they lyrics and video are a lament to watching your heroes fall from grace. Kill your idols, as it were. Another tune that piles singalong vocals onto a solid Hardcore tune, but as always with AFR, there is an added tweak and twist to their songs that makes them unique. Many reunions are something of a damp squib, but AFR are back with fire in their guts and armed with some fantastic tunes – a very welcome return. Tom Chapman
