Joe Golem: Occult Detective #1: The Rat Catcher – Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Patric Reynolds and Dave Stewart (Dark Horse)
Set in the 1950\’s against the backdrop of Lower Manhattan, The Rat Catcher sets up a ruined city half submerged by the sea. The art work is very grim and very dark and this works beautifully with a harrowing tale of missing children and monsters lurking in the waters.
Both story and artwork sit wonderfully together, but that’s only half the fun. The real fun begins with the monsters. Lots of suspense to set them up once they’re revealed and they are drawn to perfection. The violence of the monster action bursting through the page is no easy feat to capture with such dark art and story. The tale itself was a page turner, and I have to say I was gutted when said pages finally ran out. I cannot wait for the next installment. If you like your comics dark and gritty, then you can\’t go far wrong here. Dayle Millward
