Crowned Kings – Sea of Misery (Demons Run Amok)

There was a time, not so long ago, when metal-core ruled the scene roost. For an old timer like me, who originally discovered hardcore via thrash metal and the crossover movement of the mid-eighties, it was almost like a vindication of all that teenage me had hoped would happen. Hardcore and metal had finally become a single entity. Sure, it was sub-genre, but it was almost as if crossover had reached its zenith and finally achieved all that it could. At least that was what I thought at the time, but instead of standing still, remaining constant and resting on its laurels, the metal-core scene continued to evolve. And Crowned Kings, a ferociously heavy quintet who specialise in fusing punishing beatdowns and insanely catchy sing-a-longs, are leading exponents of the scenes continuing evolution. While they’ve found their own identity and are busy carving their own furrow through, and via, pits the world over, they still wear their influences on their extensively tattooed sleeves, allowing them to manifest themselves freely in their music, which means that if you’ve ever played, slammed to, or owned a record by Stampin’ Ground, Strife, Integrity, Ringworm or Rykers, then the chances are that you’re going to love Sea Of Misery. I do…  Tim Cundle
